Very true. I’ve seen two sides of the coin especially in the US:
1. Skilled and competent employee, works hard, makes little noise; unless he has a good manager, had little visibility and is not thinking in terms of amplifying the impact and perception of his work inside the company
2. Ok employee, nothing to shout about but oh my, such an eloquent talker choosing his time strategically to talk (empty) and to be noticed; rise faster in the ranks
IMHO you can’t expect people to be self-directed. That’s the role of the manager to develop those skills into their report. Such habit takes a few months to develop for a repory from my experience.
